Christmas Sweaters: The Return of the Must-Have With a Modern Touch
The countdown to Christmas 2024 has just begun. In fact, we are now very close to the start of what is by far the most beloved holiday for Italians. And especially the little ones are looking forward to savoring the Christmas atmosphere again, getting into that beautiful mood of decorated trees, colorful lights around towns and cities. And of course, there are also the gifts we give every year by depositing them under the tree to be unwrapped on the evening of December 24.
For so many, however, the fact that Christmas is now around the corner always involves the same dilemma. What will we give this year to the people we love? What gift can we surprise them with, giving them something that is really useful for them and maybe they can also use in their daily lives? Certainly, focusing on clothing items never goes wrong.
In fact, if we know the tastes in looks and outfits of the person to whom we have to give a Christmas gift, it becomes easy to choose a garment that can suit him or her and that he or she will use in his or her everyday life.
Gifting a themed sweater at Christmas may be the solution
With the arrival of winter also (which officially begins on December 21 and thus a few days before Christmas Eve) one idea may be to give the gift of a sweater.
We are in fact talking about a piece of heavy clothing that covers us and keeps us warm and therefore can really be the perfect gift to leave under the tree this year.
Also because, there is a real trend of Christmas-themed sweaters and clothing that are always popular and used every year to give an original touch to our outfits. Giving the gift of a Christmas sweater can therefore be the perfect solution if we are still undecided about which gift can make those we love the happiest.
Christmas sweater, a fashion that has exploded thanks to VIPs
In recent years, the tradition of wearing a Christmas-themed sweater has made a comeback thanks to VIPs around the world who like to show off on social media the Christmas-themed outfits with which they celebrate this holiday. Some do it in a personalized and goliardic way like the famous rock star Ozzy Osborne, who posted a snap of his Christmas-themed outfit last year, and some stick to the classics like the famous Paris Hilton.
Although in fact Hilton loves to experiment with original and decidedly over-the-top outfits, the shots of last Christmas that she spent with her boyfriend enchanted and surprised everyone. And that’s because Paris Hilton sported a Christmas sweater that was incredibly classic in its lines but still won over her fans. In Italy, this had instead been relaunched by the Ferragnez before their split. In fact, for years, fans have always welcomed photos of Chiara Ferragni, Fedez and their children sporting their beautiful Christmas outfits.
Christmas sweater, here’s how this tradition came about
Few also are aware that the tradition of wearing a Christmas sweater to celebrate this holiday is much older than one might think. In fact, it is a custom that originated in Scandinavian countries. In Northern Europe, temperatures drop so much in winter. This has led over time to the older women in the community sewing very heavy sweaters by hand for the fishermen.
And these sweaters moreover always had to be made in very bright and vivid colors. The reason for this is simple: in fact, the purpose was so that if a person fell into the water during the fishing trip, it might be easier to recognize them and find them again during the night.
This tradition of sewing colorful sweaters by hand later led to the custom of making one that celebrated Christmas, to be worn for the occasion. In the West, however, this fashion came to us thanks to a TV show that made television history. We are talking about the American series The Robinsons.
In the first season in fact, the main character Bill Crosby shows up in a Christmas sweater ( which in the series was intentionally ugly to the point that the main characters called it “Ugly Christmas Jumper”). From that point on, since we are talking about a series that was a worldwide success, first in America and then in Europe, wearing the themed sweater for Christmas dinner became a must for so many people.
