How to Dress in Layers Without Giving Up Style: Winter Tips and Outfits
The new fashion of 2024 is called layering, and it has already won over so many people who are totally redefining their outfits to follow the trends of the new season. Although the English term might suggest that we are talking about a new style that is catching on, layering has actually been around forever.
In fact, this expression refers to the old and cherished custom of dressing “onion-like” to protect oneself from the cold, going to wear several clothes that layer underneath.
So when we see on the street a person wearing a lot of clothes one the other, complemented by a coat or jacket, we are seeing just that “layering” look that will become more and more popular in the coming months. Not least because it is designers who have put layering in the spotlight, as evidenced by the latest fashion shows by the likes of Magliano or Gucci.
Layering, dressing in layers is the fashion of the moment
But, getting more specific now, how do we do layering? How do we dress in layers while managing to recreate an outfit that is truly fashionable? The first thing we need to do is to start from the base, and decide whether we prefer to start dressing in a sweater or a shirt. Right after that, it’s up to us to figure out, based on the look we want to leave the house with, whether it’s better to wear a sweater, sweatshirt or cardigan over it. Or even, for those who always prefer elegance and formality, a vest.
And then there is the choice of the heaviest garment to wear: vests, coats and jackets certainly cannot be missing from our wardrobe, first and foremost as a purely practical matter, since they are the heaviest items of clothing deputed to protect against the cold. And perhaps the choice that most of all defines our outfit in this case, because it is the most “visible” garment we wear, the first that people notice when we are out on the street.
The latest trends in the world of women’s clothing
For women who like to be daring in fashion, there are several garments we can use to dress in layers and get harmony and character from our outfit. Starting with from leather skirts, which between spring and ‘early winter, can still be worn if we are good at matching the right “layers” while covering ourselves enough to withstand the cold weather of this period.
On the other hand, when winter and low temperatures begin to set in, even the jumpsuit can become a beautiful and original garment for our layering. Everything always depends on our tastes, and whether we want to approach a more sporty style to one instead that inspires in the beholder elegance and sophistication. Cardigans are also back very much in fashion in women’s wear, and one of the trends this year, is to leave it closed at the waist but adding a belt that gives the distinctive touch to our outfit.
Choosing the right colors is critical in layering
Of course, in order to have a truly fashionable look, it is important to always pay attention, when we dress in layers, to the combinations involving colors. The moment we choose to cover ourselves in layers, with different pieces of clothing, we have to be very careful to make sure that the colors we choose are in perfect harmony with each other.
In general, it is always better not to force our hand too much and build up our layers, with clothes of one, maximum two colors. Choosing more can certainly be daring, achieve an original and seductive color effect, but the risk of error increases and we may end up looking too colorful and very unharmonious in our clothing. This season many predict that black and red will be two leading colors this winter, also able to combine and balance each other to vincenda. And this can be a great idea when we are looking for outfits that express liveliness and lightheartedness. Especially now that Christmas is just around the corner and the Christmas-themed look will be increasingly present on the streets of the country or city where we live.
But yellow is also starting to catch on more and more this year, especially in the world of womenswear, where it is beginning to be used as an alternative to white in the search for less obvious shades and hues.
