Men’s coat: the trendy fabrics and patterns for winter 2023

Left in the closet leather jacket and blazer with the arrival of autumn, waiting to wear the down jacket on outdoor days in the mountains or in the city, to face the first cold weather the ideal garment is the coat. A must in any man’s wardrobe, it is the distinctive element capable of influencing the entire look, which is why it should be chosen and matched with care. In long or short version, in double or single-breasted or belted at the waist, men’s coat is made in different fabrics and patterns: let’s see the trendy ones for winter 2023.

The vintage style

For the winter season 2023-2024, designers on the catwalk brought back vintage garments, including coats. Now the most in vogue cut is the short one, less formal and more easily worn for any physique, strictly single-breasted, which can also be worn open when the temperatures are not too cold.

The most commonly used fabric is cloth and or wool in neutral, light colors: a sugar paper gray or beige might be the right color to be on trend. Of course, there is always room for black, which goes with everything but, for a coat, is also very formal; so you have to decide according to your style.

Mutton

An overcoat that also takes the shape of a jacket, but is elegant and very warm: this is the sheepskin, an evergreen with a retro flavor that has returned to the catwalks for the cold season of 2023. A medium length and a certain shoulder width make it a casual and comfortable garment that allows you to face any event or appointment, even outdoors, without feeling the cold and sporting an impeccable style.

Of course, it is made of natural materials: externally made of suede, internally it is stuffed with shaved wool, which is not only very warm but also water-repellent. In a way considered the men’s version of fur, it is nowadays a coat with a casual cut, but it can also be tailored into a jacket model.

The navy style: the caban coat

Here is another garment that echoes the taste of retro and vintage: the caban, or the casual version of sailor coats. It is the result of one of the best experiments in converting work garments into clothing for everyday occasions, and with the right pairing it can also be used for business appointments. Produced in the typical navy blue or black color, it has a straight cut with buttons placed rather high up making it easy to wear. The fabric chosen to make it is wool, the best for warming sailors on watch nights as they crossed the North Seas, but today it also fulfills its duty for those who have to face winter in the city on their way to the office.

The belted coat

The belted waist coat echoes the autumn trench coat. To be worn almost always closed, it has a straight, long cut and not too wide revers. It can be made of cloth or a wool blend fabric, always very warm and also relatively heavy to wear. The colors to wear are classic ones: beige and camel, smoky gray or black.

The original choice: oversize coats

So far we have talked about classic patterns and fabrics, but fashion and style enthusiasts may also decide to make more original choices. Designers have proposals for them as well, taking up a trend already seen in the summer: the oversize. The coat thus becomes maxi, that is, long even to below the knee and with wide shoulders and sleeves. In these cases the preferred fabric is wool, often also colored: burgundy, light gray or bottle green are the most fashionable hues. Certainly a garment not for everyone and maybe not for all occasions, but if you want something to get noticed with this can really be the coat for you.

The accessories: the scarf

Since we are talking about defending against the winter cold, though always in style, we cannot forget the accessories to go with the coat. The scarf is almost a must, thin and elegant, in a solid color perhaps contrasting: light gray on a black garment or dark green on a beige coat. Better to avoid patterns, opting instead for plaid or check weaves, the latter to be paired with short cloth coats.
